RECRUITMENT FAQ
WHAT IS CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING? WHAT HAPPENED TO SHAKEOUT?
At the request of the ISC, EKT has stopped calling our alternative recruitment process shakeout, in order to avoid confusion with fraternity rush processes. What we now call Continuous Open Bidding (COB) works for our house the same way shakeout used to. We hold several casual "parties" over the course of a week where eligible women and nonbinary folks are invited to come, meet the Thetas, and see the house. Additionally, COB gives us the opportunity to offer bids to people who cannot attend these parties for any reason. If you're interested in potentially recieving a bid from Theta outside of formal COB parties, feel free to contact our president or recruitment chairs for more information!
SO IS THETA DOING FORMAL RECRUITMENT OR COB?
For the 2021-2022 academic year, EKT will be using Continuous Open Bidding and will not be participating in formal recruitment. Because EKT stands by the opinion that COB (previously shakeout) is the best option for our house and for Dartmouth students that would potentially join EKT, we continue to request to hold COB parties after each formal recruitment, to ensure that we don’t exclude any students who may be incapable of participating in the rush process.
WHY DOES THETA PREFER COB?
Theta has a strong history of dedication to creating change for the good of (and the empowerment of) historically under-represented groups at Dartmouth. In May 1992, we went local by breaking off from a national sorority to enact the changes we wanted. Since then, we've committed ourselves to gender equity (and inclusivity) at Dartmouth as one of our primary values, which meant breaking away from formal recruitment. Here's an article by an alumna explaining in detail Theta's preference for COB (previously shakeout).

IS COB BINDING?
It is not! Attending a COB party does not guarantee that you will receive a bid, nor does it require you to accept a bid should it be offered to you. We want all Dartmouth students to find their home on campus, and if that's not with us, we're okay with that!
IF I COME TO COB, DO I HAVE TO ATTEND ONE OF THOSE DARTMOUTH BYSTANDER INTERVENTION SESSIONS?
Yes!! Before attending any recruitment event, you must attend all of the mandatory DBI info sessions that the College requires of students participating in Greek Life.
AH SHUCKS,DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE TO GO TO THE ISC RECRUITMENT INFO SESSION TOO?
Not necessarily! If you are interested in formal ISC recruitment, you are required to attend the ISC recruitment info session, but if you will only be coming to alternative recruitment events, then you don't need to!
DO I HAVE TO STAY FOR THE WHOLE TIME DURING COB?
Nope! It's really chill. Come for a little or as long as you can, but we do recommend you stay long enough to meet and talk to a few members. That way we can get to know you and you can have all your questions answered!
DO I HAVE TO GO TO ALL COB PARTIES?
Nope! You can go to as many as you want, but you don't need to! If you want us to get to know you better, you might want to go to several, but if not, no worries!
IF MY FRIENDS DON'T GET A BID, I DON'T REALLY WANT TO JOIN. IS THERE A WAY FOR US ALL TO JOIN?
Yes! You can all come together and talk to us about joining as a group! We'll definitely take that into consideration when giving bids.
I VISITED THE HOUSE AND I DON'T THINK THETA IS THE RIGHT FOR ME. WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
If you turn down a bid that we offer you, you may still go through formal recruitment and get a bid from another sorority. If you turn down a bid that we offer you, it will not inhibit you from going through formal recruitment. We will still love you unconditionally, and we wish you luck on your journey!
I WANT TO VISIT THETA BUT I STILL HAVE SOME QUESTIONS...
That's fine! Please feel free to contact our President or our Recruitment chairs (visit the leadership page to see who these people are and send them a blitz)! They're the best people to speak with, but if you know any Thetas personally, feel free to contact them as well! You can also always reach out via social media! We're always super excited to answer your questions!
